Locals Guide to Water’s Edge Retreat & Surrounds

The Beach
Walk out the front door to head for the beach. There is a pathway on the other side of the road and to the right. Follow the pathway and cross the cul-de-sac and then cross Seaway Parade. Once you get to Kingfisher Parade, cross the road and head slightly to the right where you will see a sign saying "Walkway". Follow that grassy and sandy path and you will arrive at the beach!
It is a leisurely walk of about 5 minutes.

The Tides
We recommend knowing the tide times for Toogoom. At high tide there is not much beach to walk on but the water is about waist deep for swimming. At low tide there is plenty of beach to walk on with the sand flats going for about 1km before reaching the water.
The sand flats are great to explore with crabs scuttling along and some very shallow pools forming.
If you want a swim when it is low tide, head to Beelbi Creek.

Vernon State Forest
MOUNTAIN BIKING
Vernon State Forest is a short ride away and is home to a number of marked and graded mountain bike trails. Entering from the car park on O'Regan Creek Road just past the intersection with Toogoom Road, you will come across the trail map (this can also be accessed on-line). Trails range in length from 225m to the 3.6km Outer Limits Trail. The Joey Trail (number 1) is a good loop if you are new to Mountain biking (although you may want to walk your bike over some of the logs on the Up the Guts Trail (number 6) to get there!
4WD
There is an unsealed road commonly known as the chicken track that leads up to the Telecom Tower and great views in Vernon State Forest. The track is steep in sections and can be muddy or powdery depending on the weather making access more difficult.
There are number of unmarked tracks to explore at the top of the hill. Most of them are one-way so once you are back on the main track, keep heading back to Hervey Bay down the hill. Take care as the track becomes a bit more difficult behind the sand mines and through the Melaleuca swamp. Allow a few hours for the trip.

Lake Kalvert
Lake Kalvert provides a beautiful backdrop for our backyard. However, please keep an eye on children while they are in the back yard to ensure they stay safe. Also, please ensure that the fence to the lake closes after each use.
As an environmental lake, there is no swimming in or water activities allowed on Lake Kalvert. This includes:
No swimming
No Diving
No pets in the water
No Boating
No Skiing
Do not drink the water
You are welcome to fish in the Lake, however, if you catch fish, please ensure that you dispose of all waste responsibly.
If you would like to walk around the lake, it is approximately 3km on a mix of the local streets and footpaths.

Tours
WHALE WATCHING
It is about a 30 minute drive to the Urangun Boat Harbour where many of the whale watching boats depart. There are many different experiences on offer from large boats (Tasman Venture, Whalesong) to smaller boats (Freedom III) and catermerans (Blue Dolphin). Some run day tours and others full days with some also offering the opportunity to swim with the whales. The whale watching season runs from mid-July to November.
K’GARI (Fraser Island)
If you have a 4WD, you can head over on a morning barge from River Heads (about 35 minute drive) to Kingfisher Bay Resort and spend the day exploring Central Station and Lake McKenzie before returning by barge in the late afternoon. There are also days trips on offer by bus (K'gari Explorer Tours, Fraser Experience) or 4WD (Fantastic Fraser Island).
Otherwise, we recommend the Remote K'Gari Tour run by Tasman Venture that takes you by boat to the beautiful Western shores of K'Gari where you will kayak, go snorkelling and climb a sand dune. For the even more adventurous, try Fraser Coast Jetski Tours!
SUNSET CRUISE
The sunsets are spectacular in Hervey Bay and a great way to experience one is on a boat out in the harbour. One of our favourites is the Milbi Sunset Cruise on offer from Hervey Bay Eco Marine Tours where you sip on champagne and eat prawns as the sunsets. For a more luxurious experience, Blue Dolphin offers a Champagne Sunset Sail aboard its yacht.

Beelbi Creek
When the tide is out, you can still go swimming in Beelbi Creek. Following the short bush path from the car park, you will pass a picnic shelter and BBQ before coming out onto the beach. There is plenty of room to lay out your towel and it is also a popular fishing spot at high tide.
